Ideally Typed Team's

This guide is going to walk you through the do's and don’ts of building an ideally* typed team in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
Most of this guide will be towards building a team for the in-game Elite Four. Don't take this advice onto Netbattle or something. I have no idea about that kind of advanced Team Building. ^^; *Ideal here means 'My Ideal Team'. Obviously, people are going to have different views about what is the best to use and whatnot. This is just the way I figured out my team.

It's all about Types

Having a Type advantage over your opponent can be crucial. If all your Pokémon are Fire type, and going up against a Water type team, you don't really have much chance. So, here, I'll guide you through the types and some recommended Pokémon to include in your team; not just for the Elite Four, but for the Gym Leaders and various trainers too.

Having a well balanced team is an excellent strategy to start with. Having two Electric types in your team may be a little pointless, don't you think? The types I think you should need in your team are:

  • Fighting
  • Fire
  • Ground
  • Ice
  • Electric
  • Water
One Pokémon for each type. But, if you can cover two of these types on one Pokémon (eg. Swampert will cover both Water and Ground) then you can have your pick at a different type. Preferably one that will help you out later with the Elite Four, as they will be the toughest battle you'll face.

My Recommended Pokémon

Playing through these games many times, I've been through a lot of teams and a lot of Pokémon. Some were good, others... not so much. I'll tell you some of my highly recommended Pokémon for Ruby and Sapphire: (remember, this is in-game only)

Fighting Types

Most of the time, Fighting types only learn two move types; Fighting and Normal. Only secondary Fighting types get a little leverage, which is why I prefer to use them over something like Machamp. My most recommended Fighting list would be:
  • Blaziken
  • Breloom
  • Hariyama
  • Medicham
  • Heracross

Fire

Every team needs a little Fire power. Pun definitely intended xD. Now, there aren't many Fire Pokémon to choose in this game, so you pretty much get what you're given. =/
  • Blaziken
  • Camerupt
  • Ninetales
If any of those don't satisfy you, by all means, choose one of the other Fire Types. Or, go my way, and just get another Pokémon and teach it Fire Type moves. (Pretty much any Dragon type can learn Flamethrower, so you could go with one of those. Salamence is a good option here)

Ground

Ground types are pretty abundant in Hoenn, so you shouldn't have much trouble here. If in doubt, simply choose a different typed Pokémon and teach it a Ground type move, such as Earthquake.
  • Swampert
  • Golem
  • Camerupt
  • Flygon
  • Whiscash
  • Claydol
  • Rhydon
  • Groudon

Ice

Ice types are key in any Elite Four team, especially against those Dragon types. Again, this type is pretty... rare. But almost every Water type can learn Ice Beam; so if you don't like any of the Ice Types below, just teach your Water type an Ice move.
  • Glalie
  • Walrein
  • Regice

Electric

Electric types are sometimes hard to come by, but are useful none the less. Some of these Pokémon hardly learn any good electric typed attacks (I'm looking at you, Electrode) But they can learn things like Thunder from a TM... so it's all good. xD
  • Manectric
  • Magneton
  • Electrode
  • Raichu
  • Lanturn

Water

Ok, you should have absolutely no trouble picking out a Water type for your team. There are so many to choose from, if you're that picky... then I don't know what to say xD. Any of these Water types will work wonders:
  • Swampert
  • Gyarados
  • Azumarill
  • Tentacruel
  • Sharpedo
  • Wailord
  • Whiscash
  • Crawdaunt
  • Milotic
  • Starmie
  • Golduck
  • Walrein
  • Lanturn
  • Kingdra
  • Kyogre

Conclusion

So, in conclusion (Man, sounds like I'm writing a paper for school xD) Make sure to include many different types in your team. One from each of those should make for a wonderfully balanced team. Using Dual typed Pokémon is even better. It adds more variety so your team will be ready for anything that the Elite or any other in-game trainer will throw at you.
